Primary and Ensuite Maquette

Inspired by Ushuaia, Argentina

This project focused on a city-based vernacular, Ushuaia, Argentina. Because the clients were from this area, we wanted to honour the land and their culture while creating a modern Canadiana twist.

Early explorers saw fires on the shore of Ushuaia and nicknamed it “Terra del Fuego”, meaning Land of Fire. I knew this would be my starting point, the focal point of the entire room.

The landscape, climate, history, and main industries in the area were essential to develop the design language. We drew inspiration from the mountains, water, past and current culture, and the architecture found in the area, namely from the works by Michael Reynolds. He cleverly reused washed up bottles from the shore to integrate into his design. This inspiration went into the development the wet room.

A Panoramic View

I knew I wanted the fireplace to be viewed throughout the space, and chose an open concept design to acheive this. To create the layered effect, I chose a chaise lounge with a curved backing, and created a headboard in the opposite direction to reflects the tumbling hillside in the tundra area.

Pointed tips were used throughout the space through the windows, millwork, lighting, and accessories to allude to the mountainous backdrop.

The Ensuite

The ensuite explores the fishing industry as a stylistic element, with the lighting fixtures, wooden plank flooring, wall tiles, and faucets. We can better see the use of curves through the vanity,  wet room walls, wall tiles, shower seating, and floor elevation to create the illusion of a wave in motion. To tie into the red roofs of Ushuaia, the storage for toothbrushes on the vanity also incorporates a similar design. Finally, to solidify the idea of the meaning of Terra del Fuego, the entire space has been accessorized with many candles.
