Loft Design

For a Bachelor with many Interests

This project was an exploration of my client's hobbies and how to incorporate that into the design language. At the end of this page you can view some of the research and development that went into creating this space.

This is was a made up client based off of Hannibal Lecter, so we wanted to create a dark, formal, and sophisticated living space to represent who he embodies as a character. Minimalism with straight edges and privacy/hidden spaces are crucial for this design language.

We needed a climate controlled wine rack, a seating area for clients, and ample storage and displays for his many interests.

Main Floor
Second Floor

When you first enter the space, you are greeted with a peak of the large floor to ceiling windows that brighten the space. There you can also catch a glimpse of the extensive wine collection in the temperature/light controlled wine cellar. This wine cellar is accessible from both the kitchen area, as well as the dining room/bar for both display and convenience. On the opposing wall is a fully hidden I shaped Kitchen with all the necessities if needed.

To the right of the entrance, we have a seating area for close patients to meet with our client, as well as a powder room. This space can be fully enclosed to ensure privacy and seclusion from the rest of the living space.

As we enter the main living area, we see the dining room and bar area, stocked with wine glasses and a small sink wine glass rinser. This room is separated with a fireplace room divider, where shelving has been incorporated to display wine decanters on one side, and books on the other. We can also see floor to ceiling bookshelves that can be accessed on both the main and second floor.

As we move up the staircase, we are met with a display area for a variety of his collections. Upon reaching the second floor, we see an office space to the left, and a watch and shoe display to the right. A catwalk has also been added to access our client’s rare book collection. Through this space, we can access the walk in closet and ensuite. There is also access to the walk in closet from the primary bedroom, enclosed at the far end of the apartment. This room was strategically placed for light control.

Bar and dining area to the left, with an entrance into the walk in wine cooler. To the left, the lounge area. Dividing the space is a a built in fireplace room divider, with shelving on the dining room side, and a media unit on the other.

Here is a minimal single wall kitchen with a sliding door to conceal the space when not in use. As a bachelor who doesn't do much cooking, he wanted the kitchen space to be minimal, as if it wasn't even there. Second entrance into the walk-in wine cooler can be seen on the right.
